At Absolute Boat Care, the re-varnishing of superyacht woodwork is an expertly managed process using the best available systems and materials to restore timber features such as cap rails, doors, bulwarks and exterior tables to their original prestige.

1. Initial Assessment and Surface Protection
Each project begins with a thorough inspection of the timber. We assess the extent of ultraviolet degradation, erosion, and any issues with the existing coatings. All surrounding surfaces, including stainless steel fittings and deck areas, are carefully masked and protected to create a dust free and secure working area.
2. Stripping, Repairs and Preparation
Timber such as teak cap rails and varnished bulwark panels will be stripped back to bare wood if the original coating has failed or begun to flake. This is done by hand sanding, mechanical sanding systems and, where appropriate, marine grade chemical strippers.
Surface repairs are undertaken at this stage. Stained or damaged areas are gently sanded and, where necessary, filled with a high performance timber epoxy. Any minor colour corrections are matched with professional tints to ensure a uniform finish.

3. Controlled Working Environment
We ensure the immediate environment is kept as clean as possible. This may involve dust extraction systems and, on occasion, tenting to better control temperature and humidity which are essential for first class varnish work on superyacht exteriors and interiors.
4. Application of Professional Varnish Systems
When selecting a varnish system for superyacht cap rails and brightwork, we choose from leading products recognised for performance and durability in the marine sector:
Awlwood MA from AkzoNobel is often our first choice for external brightwork. Awlwood provides exceptional ultraviolet resistance and flexibility, delivering a deep, clear gloss that stands up to harsh maritime environments
For a traditional finish on interiors or classic yachts, we select Epifanes Clear Varnish or Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss, both famed for clarity, depth and their ability to build multiple layers smoothly
Where a two component polyurethane system is required, particularly for hard wearing cap rails and transoms, Awlgrip HDT Clear Gloss and International Perfection Plus are preferred. These deliver maximum durability and chemical resistance
Typically, eight to twelve coats are applied on external cap rails to ensure exceptional ultraviolet protection and gloss. Each coat is methodically applied with fine brushes or foam rollers and de-nibbed with ultra fine abrasive between each layer for the smoothest possible results.
5. Finishing and Handover
After the final coats, we undertake a detailed polish to eliminate any minor imperfections and maximise the depth of gloss. Every area is checked in both natural and artificial light to guarantee a flawless, even appearance.
The team at Absolute Boat Care then removes all masking and cleans the work site completely. All work is signed off only after a final client walk through and inspection.
Our use of global marine coating brands such as Awlwood, Epifanes, International and Awlgrip ensures Absolute Boat Care delivers finishes that meet the highest superyacht standards, whether on varnished cap rails, bulwarks, custom joinery or exterior tables. Your yacht’s timber will look as good as new, protected for seasons ahead.
